Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1956)

A doctor tells a story of how something evil is going
on. His story starts the previous
Thursday. He returns from a convention
and finds things are amiss. Lots of
people have been sick and some think their family members are imposters. One of the towns people calls him over to his
house to show him an almost body. I say
almost because it’s organs and everything is in order but the face doesn’t seem
fully developed. Later that night the
man cuts his hand and the laceration appears on the random body too. It has fully formed into that
townsperson. Dun Dun Duh.
Same story with his girlfriend and a random forming
body. He grabs her and brings her to a
safer house but when he returns with the police and a psychologist for the
evidence the bodies have vanished. Of
course no one believes the doc who saw peoples doubles.
At a barbeque the next day, the doc and his friends find a
couple of giant seedpods where the bodies are coming from. It’s time for action! The doc tries to get in touch with the FBI
and his friends leave to get help. The
FBI can’t be reached so Doc and his girlfriend leave to get help themselves but
the whole town has already been changed into imposters. Now they are the ones on the run.

They make it through the night and see the pod people
organizing to take over the surrounding town.
They get busted and told when they fall asleep their minds and bodies
will be taken over. They make a pretty
decent escape and get away into an old mine.
The trouble now is staying awake.
After a mighty struggle, the girlfriend falls asleep and is turned. The doc runs and makes it to the next town
only to be thought of as a crazy person.
That brings us back to the present and he has finished
telling his story to the police. There
is another sighting of the seedpods and the police finally believe and start to
take action. The end.

Rating: 7.8 This is one of the best horror/sci-fi movies that
I’ve seen from the 50’s. Most have campy
acting or awful special effects but Invasion of the Body Snatchers really held
up. The director wanted to have a darker
ending, which I would’ve been in favor of, but this one was still good.
Favorite Scene: I can think of a few but the two main
characters looking at the town from the doctor’s office near the end was
probably the coolest.
Memorable Lines: “I don't want to live in a world without
love or grief or beauty, I'd rather die.”
What would I do if I was the main character: I would like to
say that I would rally the resistance and defeat the alien menace but there’s
just no way. I love sleep and need a lot
of it. If I had my way, I would probably
sleep 13 hours a day. I’m not staying
awake long enough to no change.
What happens in the sequel: 98% of the world has been body
snatched. Mulder saves the remaining
humans. Scully still doesn’t believe.
