Movie # 23 Paranormal Activity 3

Paranormal Activity 3 (2011)

For some reason I'm still watching these. I'm curious and wanted to see what happened next because the ending if 2 was a lead in to 3. Except that 3 is the prequel to the prequel that is the second so it doesn't have anything to do with the lasts ending. And this pre-prequel has it's own set up for the sequel (prequel ending) so that's like three loose endings. How many movies in this series are they going to make? The Saw's, which should have ended after two, went on to have seven movies. I stopped watching after three. This might be my cut off in Paranormal Activities (Activity's? maybe neither).

Just like the second, the first 20 minutes or so of Paranormal Activity 3 are super boring. All of the family members will be annoying and you hope the ghosts get to the sooner than later. This movie takes place back in 88 and is supposed to be the tapes of the first time the girls encountered the demon when they were little. The first thing you notice is that this is a lie. Home movies made in 88 just did not have the picture quality that this movie does. One of the little girls has a loose tooth and we get to see it up close. It's probably gnarlier than anything you have seen in the first two.

The main guy doing the filming in this one is the boyfriend of the mom who has the two daughters. The boyfriend plays the lamest prank in the world on his assistant that winds up in the kid holding up a light or something for a long time. Got him! One day the boyfriend is home alone and here a noise. He checks it out there is a creepy little closet in the girls room that he checks out and when he comes back one of the little girl's is just standing there. 07% creepy.

Mom gets to smoking a little weed one night. Must be the 80s. They get super near banging and I really don't want to see it. I don't think the ghost wants to see it either. Out of nowhere there is a completely unrelated earthquake and mood is lost. Saved by the earthquake! Dust falls from the ceiling onto an invisible something. It's pretty cool looking. The boyfriend spots this the next day and sets up cameras everywhere.

Night One : You hear a door open. One of the girls wakes up and starts talking to an imaginary friend/demon ghost guy. The next day the boyfriend asks the girl about her friend and she says his name is Toby. He is old and tall and if the girl repeats what he tells her then she will be in big trouble. The guy believes he is a spirit or something but the mom doesn't buy it. If you read my post on Paranormal Activity 2, you know how annoying I think this is. The boyfriend hears a noise just like the first day. Goes to investigate and checks out another closet. Out pops the mom in a mask! I jumped big time.

Night Five : I guess the movie skipped a few nights. A light in the hallway goes on and off. The girls are in a tent in the backyard camping out. The couple keeps hearing footsteps and a door closes on it's own. They go outside and the girls are asleep in the tent so it couldn't be them. At this point I would be losing my FREAKING mind. I don't do well with scares but like horror movies. Not a good combo.

Night Six: Stuff is moving. Shutters slam shut. Again would be losing it. Mom in still doesn't believe.

Night Eight : Little girl runs by the parents door really fast. Little girls are creepy in horror movies and this one is no different. The girl climbs on a table and spends all night playing with Toby. The next day the boyfriend is playing with the girls and says Toby is standing right next to them. He probably is. They do the old Bloody Mary and nothing happens until they leave. Then the door slams. I jump.

Night Ten : Mom goes down stairs and the light moves again. It eventually falls and breaks. I jump. I know I'm not good with the jumps but I should be a little tougher/manlier at this point. Nothing has really even happened yet. Only one of the girls can see Toby. The other makes of Toby and says he isn't real. She climbs in creepy closet and the door slams shut on her. The door closes on its own again after that.

The next night a babysitter comes over to watch the girls and I am already worried for her. She jumps out and tries to scare me in one of the cameras and I don't feel bad for her anymore. The camera is now moving back and forth on a roller of some kind. Out of nowhere there is a sheet behind the babysitter with one of the girls under it. When the babysitter turns around, whatever was under the sheet disappears and its now just flat on the ground. Creepy. The next night one of the girls keeps jumping from the second story and is fine while playing with Toby. The boyfriend sees what is going on from the tapes but doesn't tell the mom because he doesn't want her to freak out. Dummy. She should be freaking out.

Following night the creepier little girl just stands in the parents room, not moving for an hour. The next day she says that she isn't talking to Toby anymore. That's good for everyone I think. Same girl wakes up sick later and there are weird shapes drawn all over the wall in the creepy closet. Think like a pentagram but it's something else instead. Boyfriend's assistant comes over to babysit the next day. I think he knows about Toby and is reluctant. He and one of the girls do Bloody Mary again. He gets clawed by something and tries to calm the girl down while not being able to himself. Something is banging at the door trying to get in while trashing the room outside. Probably my favorite scene.

The boyfriend finds the symbol in a picture of the girlfriends family from the 30's. They were Wiccans or something. Same day one of the girls gets yanked and held into the air by Toby. Nobody seems to care.

Night 14 : There is a weird white noise coming from the TV in the moms room while she sleeps and the boyfriend is in the basement with headphones on. This means the parents don't care about what happens to the girls. Things in the room start to slightly move all over the place. One of the girls sheets lifts up. The sheet is violently ripped of the bed. Then she gets violently ripped into the scary closet. She gets out but then it happens again. Nobody cares. Later the mom says that she doesn't believe in ghosts. I blame this all on her. She walks into the kitchen the next day and everything is levitating near the ceiling. It suddenly drops and she's finally had it. They decide to go to grandma's house.

SPOILER ENDING
Going to grandma's house just feels like a giant mistake. The little girl says she still see Toby there. That can't be good. The couple is woken up in the night. Mom goes to check on the girls. The guy is all alone and it's quiet, too quiet? Definitely too quiet. Creepy old grandma appears and then disappears. Not sure if old ladies are creepier than young girls. In this movie I'm going to go with the elderly. Mom and the girls are now missing. Things are super tense. Where pictures were once hanging on the walls there are now the same Wicca symbols that were in the scary closet. I knew the grandma was no good. He walks out to the garage and turns on the light to see a bunch of old ladies in robes. I can only think of two things scarier and they both involve mayonnaise.

He is thoroughly spooked and runs back into the house. There he sees his girlfriend floating in the air. At this point I would slowly try and back out of the relationship but perhaps for him it is too late. She was at the top of the stairs but is thrown downstairs and probably dies. The girl who can see Toby walks down the stairs. Boyfriend takes her and they hide in a closet. Outside you hear these super loud animal noises. He cracks the door open and a black figure runs by. The leave the closet and see the other girl crying next to the mom. Boyfriend walks up to her and she is full demon face. He freaks out and falls backward, injuring himself. The Grandma walks in and Toby comes with her. The ghost steps on the boyfriend and bends him over backwards, killing him for sure. The grandma was kind of in control of Toby it seemed. She takes the girls by the hands, steps over the mom and says “Lets go upstairs to get ready”.

Favorite Scene : The second Bloody Mary scene. I think it has to do with it being in daylight making it different from all the other scare scenes. I dug it.

Memorable Lines : Just pass

Rating : 4.5 Tic Tacs. Any amount of suspense that they built over the movie was completely destroyed by the lack of an ending. I get leaving things opened to the next one, but you have to have some kind of an ending. Like explain why at least some of the things happened. And if people are dead or not. I actually got a little angry when the movie just ended. I sat through an hour and a half of security footage for that? But I should've known after the other ones.

Alternate Ending : Just everyone dies. Everyone. That means if the girls died then the first ones should have never happened so no one watches them again. And everyone is dead so we don't need another prequel/sequel.

What I would have done if I was the main character : Same thing as the last one. Call an old priest and a young priest and get them to shake down the place.

What happens in the sequel/prequel : I'm guessing we find out why the grandma is so naughty. When she says lets go upstairs to get ready, it's to watch the Lawrence Welk Show. It's pretty scary.

Just be happy it's over.
